<image:caption>The Past: Sometimes I have to remind myself that I’m still here. I would share this advice with anyone who is suffering from addiction, “if you are going through hell, keep walking.” I never intended to become addicted to prescription pain killers. I was gainfully employed in a livable wage job and seeking to further myself with the company when I slipped and fell. Within the next couple of days my back went out completely and I was in unbearable pain. A simple pill became a complicated fix as dependency formed. I managed to get physically better but the addiction never left. Eventually, I went back to work but then it happened again. I look back and I remember thinking, here I am in the prime of my life barely existing off workman’s compensation and facing a future as a disabled man. The depression was real. This led to a series of life events that took me to my darkest hour but one of my most defining moments. Opiate overdose is the near-death experience that shook me to my core. It was then that I prayed for a way out of this cavern in my life. I never realized that incarceration would be the impetus for my sobriety but I am thankful. While incarcerated at Pickaway Correctional Institution a representative from IMPACT visited the prison and shared the Re-Entry Work Readiness Program. Upon my release and after treatment I had to find the real me without the imposter that I had become. The Process: The Re-Entry Work Readiness program transformed my thoughts and put me back in touch with who I am. During the three-week program, I experienced internal freedom from my past. I’ve incorporated the interpersonal skill that will help me develop into a better human being. Once promoted, I managed to be accepted into the Employment Plus Workforce Development Program where every tool that I had just learned got sharpened. With guidance, we investigated principles and learned concepts that challenged my perceptions about employment. The Progress: Graduation is another promotion ceremony to benchmark success. During Employment Plus graduation I was on a natural high that I’ve never felt before. Although I had what some would call a good life prior to addiction, I’d never worked this hard for anything in my life and the sense of accomplishment overwhelmed me with emotion. If you knew me then and seen me now, there would be no doubt in your mind that I’ve changed. I’ve been transformed and this transformation took place from the inside out. I know I’m not perfect and I wrestle with myself every day but I found a starting place at IMPACT. My classmates never have seen my tears and I remind myself that I’m still here. The Present: I am a full-time Lead 3rd Shift Trainer making $18.19 an hour. On the shift differential, I earn $20 an hour. When I landed this job I cried. I thought that I must be turning soft but no, my heart is in the right place. You see I went to class at IMPACT by day and worked all night as an event crewman and it paid off. It wasn’t that I didn’t care about the money. Somehow I needed to prove to myself that I was worthy to come back to work and this time I would be better, safer and take nothing for granted. I’ve also purchased my first vehicle. I am a licensed, insured driver can you believe it! When you lose everything and get it back it’s the most incredible feeling. My long-term goal is to continue to build my credit to purchase my first home. There are not enough words to explain how I feel about my life. I’ve had other programs pour into my development but there is no organization like IMPACT. If I had to give advice to anyone like me who had almost died because of opiate addiction, it would be this. You can start over and have a life after a near-death experience. The Re-entry Work Readiness Program at IMPACT was my starting place and I highly recommend it. The Possibility: According to Franklin County Public Health, addiction to opiates/opioids is no longer a hidden issue – it is in plain sight. Addiction to opioids is resulting in unprecedented overdose deaths. The question is, what happens to those who survive? Although IMPACT Community Action does not provide treatment nor is a treatment facility, Empowerment Services Programs' holistic approach to self-sufficiency supports prosocial behavioral change. These changes lead to self–efficacy, self- governance, and self- sufficiency. Franklin County Public Health: https://myfcph.org/health-systems-planning/ep/opiate-crisis/</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Problem: One day we were happy and planning our wedding and the next day my fiancée’s medical condition worsened and I found myself working full-time, 60 hours per week juggling our daughters in between doctor’s visits and school. My kids and my fiancée mean the world to me and the sacrifice of not being there for them weighed heavily on my heart. My fiancée who was once a provider has an ongoing health issue and cannot contribute. I have a beautiful 11-year-old who loves to dance and cheer and a two-year-old daughter that is full of energy. I’d spent maybe three hours a day with them. One hour in the morning before work and about two hours in the evening when I got home. It was exhausting. When you acquire a full-time job, state benefits decrease so severely that it almost feels like no help at all. I needed all of the help I could get. I almost felt punished for trying to become self –reliant while teetering on the edge of dependency. I made the tough decision to reduce my work hours and spend more time with my family. I’m still working full-time but I lost about $300 a paycheck. The Process: At first, we juggled the bills. After a while, there simply is not enough money. I felt like things were going to fall apart. That’s when I searched for help and found IMPACT. When I learned about the Home Energy Assistance Program/ Percentage of Income Payment Plan honestly, I cried. At times it had been so hard and here was an answer to my prayers. The PIPP program was a way to stop my finances from spiraling out of control. The Progress: Based on my income I went from a $350-dollar bill to about a $60-monthly payment option and a huge weight was lifted of our shoulders. The thought of being evicted because your utility is disconnected is over whelming but the PIPP program gave us an affordable budget that we can manage. I now have a little bit of money to put towards another bill or get gas, buy food or get something for the kids. The best part is that I am making a contribution. I am happy to pay on time and in full. No one should have to work this hard and not feel active in the solution. I can see my contribution monthly on the bill and the programs benefit. This is the best part of the PIPP program to me. The PIPP program is a blessing. It’s still hard and it’s a daily struggle but I know we can make it until we can get back on our feet. The Partnership: The Home Energy Assistance Program/Percentage of Income Payment Plan Plus helps thousands of central Ohioans manage their energy bills year-round. IMPACT Community Action is a local provider serving more than 20 thousand families in Franklin County.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Past: Our home was built in 1941 and placed in the backdrop of the beautiful Linden trees. The stucco walls, watching movies, going out in the backyard swinging on the swing set and eating at the picnic table with my siblings are some of my fondest childhood memories. As an adult, like most kids, I left home. Years later I’d return to take care of my aging father. For twelve years I took care of him and kept him in his home. When he died, I inherited his most precious possession. Sometimes I think that my father’s presence held this house together and when he passed, it all kind of fell apart. The Problem: First, the furnace went out. It may have been as old as the house but it was completely beyond repair and the roof was leaking. It was the middle of Winter and I’d been without heat for 30 days. It was thirty degrees outside and forty degrees in my home. I applied for the Home Weatherization Assistance Program with the hope that they could help me. The Process: Initially, my home was beyond the scope of weatherization services because of the leaking roof. Attempts to keep the house warm through electric heaters was ineffective. The cold also affected the plumbing and the water meter broke and soon some electrical issues followed. It was one of the most difficult times is my life. I was worried that if it rained the roof would leak and I had to transport water to complete basic functions in the kitchen because the water was shut off at the valve on the sink. My utility bills were increasing because I had no heat and was using electric heaters to stay warm. When the circuit breakers began to shut down, I think I did too. I could not afford to make the repairs on my own and I felt myself going downhill. That’s when I reached out again desperate for assistance. The Progress: My advocacy efforts earned a response from the Ohio Development Services Agency that I can truly say was music to my ears. “Ms. Nixon we are going to combine programs and resources and help repair your home.” I was more than elated. IMPACT along with a group of partners met me at my front door and put my house back together again. Day by day the activity increased at my home. One of my neighbors asked if I had hit the lottery or something because there was so much work going. My furnace was repaired and my heat restored. Someone fixed the roof, someone else fixed the water meter and repaired the plumbing. An electrician repaired the circuitry and my home was weatherized through IMPACT’s Home Weatherization Assistance Program. The Peace of Mind: With the repairs made to my home, I felt a sigh of great relief that I could have some normalcy again and get back to my work and life. I am so very grateful to the people who worked on my home. I realize that they are contractors and each could work for any company of their choice or in more affluent areas but if they are going to come to the heart of communities to help someone like me, it has to be a matter of the heart and not money. In the living room to the right side of the front door is a handsome picture of my father. In it, he is smiling. I know that he would have been happy to see that this old house will remain a home. The Partnership: The Nixon home was a combination project between IMPACT Community Action, Warm Choice, American Electric Power and the Department of Energy, all partners provide weatherization assistance. The value of service of the combined weatherization and energy efficient repairs made to the Nixon home was $16,428. (furnace $3,411.00, power vented tank $1,680.00, electric $1375, ASHRAE fan $424.00, plumbing $4280, roof repair $5,257.00) The cost of labor was $8710.37. The value of the preservation of the Nixon home… priceless. The Home Weatherization Assistance Program (HWAP) provides eligible Ohioans with assistance to improve the energy efficiency of their homes and reduce their energy costs. *Ohio’s HWAP is one of the highest performing low-income weatherization programs in the nation. Not only has it reduced energy consumption and corresponding bills, but it has also had an effect on payment behavior.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Present: Today, I am a member of the Local #189 Plumbers & Pipe Fitters. I am gainfully employed full-time with a local contractor and I earn $15.30 an hour as a first year apprentice. In seven to ten years I will become a Master Pipe Fitter. I am very fortunate to still have options for my career choice. An interaction with the Vocational Training & Certification Program (VTAC) provided the opportunity for me to not only reconnect with my dream but re–purpose myself. The Past: I was in full pursuit of my dream. From 2007- 2011 I was with the Local #18. The Local #18 is a progressive diversified trade union representing Operating Engineers who work as heavy equipment operators, mechanics and surveyors in the construction industry, and Stationary Engineers who work in operations and maintenance building and industrial complexes. Sometime during 2011, I was accepted into the Local #189 Plumbers and Pipe Fitters as an Apprentice the first step in becoming a Master Pipe Fitter. The journey takes seven to ten years and requires extensive training and ultimately passing a state licensing and certification exam. I will have the opportunity to be my own boss, earn a comfortable salary, determine my own work schedule and eventually run my own company. My life was on the right track when one night I made the mistake of a life time. The end result was incarceration. The Pain: I would spend the next 5 years in Pickaway Correctional Institute as a first time felon surrounded by seasoned inmates in a foreign community that I would call home. I adapted. I still remember losing my identity as my name became a number and a nickname replaced what my mother called me. I had five years to get to know myself. The future that I planned never included incarceration. I was lost. The Process: I believe that you leave incarceration in one of two conditions. You are either resentful or repented. Upon my release I tried to do it on my own. As a first time felon, I thought that I had an edge over other ex-offenders who may have had more interaction with the justice system but I found that I was no different. I had the same barriers as everyone else who had served the time but still found themselves behind bars. Barred from employment, barred from acceptance, barred from the opportunity to have a decent life. I tried the Re- Entry Work Readiness program one – week after I got out of prison because I realized that I needed help. I wasn’t aware that I was what you call “institutionalized” meaning that I was suffering from the psychological effects of having been in an institution for an extended period of time. Unbeknownst to me I’d taken the mindset and social skills from prison back to the community and I was angry. The Re- Entry Work Readiness Program related to my human experience and addressed my emotions in a manner that I could accept what happened to me and be released from it as well. The Progress: After promotion from the Re-Entry program I became determined to be a better person, a better son and to get back into the Local #189 and finish what I started. Employment Plus lead me to VTAC. Getting reacquainted with tools and matching skills with my abilities was energizing. While in VTAC I had the opportunity to attend a job fair with union representatives and my heart leaped. This was my first real chance to touch bases with my dream. I spoke with a Union Rep. about apprenticeship programs. Because of this conversation I researched what I needed to do to get back into the union. When I found out that the time had elapsed on my testing and certifications which meant that I would have to start over again, this could have been discouraging but it wasn’t. When you become hungry and thirsty for the life you desire to have you will work day and night for it. I’m about that life. After VTAC I landed a job at Worthington Steel making $13.80 an hour on 3rd shift. I stabilized my housing, finances and transportation and became a trusted employee. Still with my goal in sight, I scheduled and passed my union placement and aptitude test. One of my favorite quotes is a line from the Fugees song Ready or Not. It says, “I’m a born again hooligan only to be king again.” I feel like I climbed a mountain and I finally reached the top. To be able to stand and appreciate being back at one, a new start in the same place but I am a different man. I now know who I am. I am a man that overcame barriers, that fought his way out of his circumstance and a man that his mother can respect and recognize as her son. This is an incredible feeling. Now that I’ve made it to this point, I can truly leave my past behind and live in my future. The Partnership: The Vocational Training & Certification Program (VTAC) is a partnership between IMPACT Community Action, the National Skilled Trades Network and the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services. VTAC career certification is closing the gap to self–sufficiency by leading to higher wage or livable wage employment opportunities.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Today, I am seated on the Board of Directors of IMPACT Community Action. I represent the community sector of the Southeast quadrant of Franklin County. Just a few years ago, I was seated in the Employment Plus Work Readiness class at IMPACT.” --Glynis Jackson, Employment Plus program and IMPACT Board member. There is a saying that, “Into each life a little rain must fall.” Well, mine was a tsunami of personal issues and familial issues that affected my professional life. I felt like I was drowning in the midst of my circumstances. Employment was the solution to my economic hardship; however, just getting a job does not uplift one’s spirit after being knocked down by life. I believe that IMPACT has found the formula that re-ignites the spark in the human spirit and guides people to a place of empowerment. IMPACT’s Employment Plus program provided me with the reassurance that I needed to become stronger and take destiny into my own hands. Following graduation from Employment Plus, I had the opportunity to participate in the election process for a community sector representative to sit on IMPACT’s Board of Directors. IMPACT Community Action has a tri-partite Board comprised of public, private and community sector representatives. The community sector representative is elected by the people to represent the people. I thought to myself, who better to represent this community than me? I had recently lived in poverty and strongly believed that I possessed the insight to become an advocate at the decision-making table of the same organization that helped me. I had no idea that after competing in the democratic election process and winning, that God was preparing me for my next position. Today, I am employed as a trainer for the Franklin County Board of Elections where I am empowering people through civic engagement and governance. Maxine Waters is one of the leaders who inspires me. Following her example, I have “reclaimed my time,” and servant leadership will be my focus as I continue to tell everyone about this poverty fighting agency. *This story is a part of our "Life After IMPACT" Publication.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“The American Dream is still alive and with IMPACT’s help, my dream of home ownership has become a reality.” --Deloria Stokes, IDA program My life after IMPACT is centered around being the proud owner of newly a constructed 4-bedroom home. I am a 44-year-old single parent who wanted a safe, affordable home to rear my children. I found out about the Individual Development Account (IDA) program offered through Financial Services at IMPACT Community Action. Signing up for the IDA program was a simple non – intimidating process; however, buying a home was complex and admittedly, I felt a little discouraged at first. I looked at my income, I had no savings and no plan. But IMPACT and the Columbus Urban League (CUL) turned that all around for me. I was enrolled in the Columbus Urban League’s 700 Club and Home Buyer’s education course where I learned step-by–step everything that I needed to know about purchasing a home. Once I received financial coaching and completed my financial literacy requirements for IMPACT, I opened an (IDA) through 5/3 Bank. I was required to save a minimum of $500 towards my goal. I saved the first $500 dollars within three months of my enrollment and continued to save until I had a total of $2,000 within a year. After saving the first $500, I then received an 8:1 match of $4,000 dollars from both IMPACT and Ohio CDC. I was happy and I was scared at the same time. I’ve been in Columbus only five years and have accomplished so much. I love roller coasters and this was the ride of a lifetime. Home buying has its ups and downs and rapid curves in paperwork. I was thrilled and still terrified but, with encouragement from my family and friends, I made a declaration to myself, “ok ‘D’ this is really happening.” My loan application was approved through Habitat for Humanity and I finally had a place that I could call home. I was able to participate in the construction of my new home from start to finish and purchase my home at a much lower cost. When we sit at our dinner table, I look at my children Shianne and Dwayne and I am truly grateful to God for IMPACT Community Action, the Columbus Urban League and Habitat for Humanity. Mayor Coleman used to say that Columbus is the best place to work, live and raise a family. Well I say, Columbus is the best place to realize the American Dream…now I own my piece of the American dream. *This story is a part of our "Life After IMPACT" Publication.</image:caption>

<image:caption>It is my hope to one-day mentor young ladies like myself and teach them the tools of construction and trades so that they can place their energy into a skill that lasts a lifetime and will lead them to higher wage jobs where they can take care of themselves and their families. Amy Reynolds Women are going to prison at an alarming rate. Presently, there are about 170 women’s prisons in the country, and more than 200,000 American women serving criminal sentences, the majority of which were for non – violent offenses. These women dream of a better day, a second chance, another opportunity but after incarceration or addiction or making some bad choices, they seem to be lost. I know because I was one of them in Marysville Prison where there are many fields of dreams. Women planted in rows, a 6 by 8 feet, roughly 48 square foot cell holding potential and growth. What I’ve learned is that you don’t lose dreams, you lose hope until something or someone comes along and reignites that flame inside yourself that makes you want to try again. IMPACT Community Action is a place where you can dream again. The Re-Entry Work Readiness program is transparent and transformative. In a small room, great things happen after you are released from the mental prison and confront barriers to employment opportunities. You are bombarded with hope and possibility. Afterwards, I was determined not to fail and so I applied all of my skills and acquired knowledge to the Vocational and Training and Certification Program (VTAC) and upon my graduation, I became the second woman at IMPACT to enter the construction trades field. The lady before me broke the ground but I want to break the barrier between women and construction trades. Young ladies seem to be getting “tougher” each day but without the right guidance and training and real opportunities, they will misuse their talents and not fulfill their potential. Life after IMPACT is good after becoming employed with Korna Kokosing at $16.00 an hour I felt a sense of freedom. I had become self- sufficient and had the tools needed for upward mobility. Since then I ‘ve worked non –stop as private contractor on various projects throughout the city sharpening my skills and learning more about the construction business. order to break the barriers for women in this career, women must see other women doing the job and learn from them. My next goal is to start a company that trains and employs women like me for a career in the construction trades. I am living proof that that women do not have to compete with men but they must be competent to get the job done. Self-sufficiency is more than financial freedom it is also an internal independence that comes from knowing that you challenged yourself to become the master of your own destiny. I will not settle until I have accomplished my dreams. I learned this from IMPACT, never lose hope and live what you dream. *This story is a part of our "Life After IMPACT" Publication</image:caption>

Taking something that no one wants and restoring it back to good use.” --Benjamin Graham, VTAC program. I know that we live in a culture of where everything is disposable. It seems that is easier to just get something new rather than to repair the old one, but what about people’s lives? Our communities are filled with broken people living in the shadows of poverty and we can’t just throw them away, it is our responsibility to fix them. I have found, through IMPACT, that their programs repair, redefine and re-purpose people. With 30 years’ experience in home repair, I really did think that I knew everything. I’d been a Licensed and Certified Operating Engineer by trade and worked on construction sites all over the state. Even with my skills, I almost ruined everything in my life but God kept giving me second chances. Somehow through it all, I never stopped fixing things. The Vocational Training and Certification program (VTAC) not only validated me again, but it challenged me to take my small business, AGAPE Homes Remodeling and Home Improvement, to the next level. This is where I found self-sufficiency but I also discovered the true beauty of God’s design on fixing things. You see, in ancient Japan, when a ceramic bowl broke, they fixed it. Legend has it that a Japanese shogun was unimpressed with the repair done on a Chinese bowl he had sent to be fixed, so he hired some Japanese craftsmen to find a more beautiful method of mending ceramics. They developed a technique called kintsugi, in which the broken pottery is literally mended with gold dust. Rather than trying to hide the flaws in the broken ceramics, they would highlight them in gold. The ceramics mended with kintsugi actually became more valuable than they had been before they were broken. This “kintsugi” is exactly what IMPACT Community Action performed in my life. IMPACT is a place where one does not have to hide their cracks or flaws. VTAC is designed to fill those “cracks” with training, skill development, mentorship and tools. Once you’ve completed the program you can pursue a career in the skilled trades and potentially determine that you will never have to live in poverty again. Since I’ve completed VTAC, I’ve become inspired and I try to encourage young men to take advantage of the opportunities that are now being provided to them through IMPACT Community Action. You see, I tell these young men they have to come out of hiding and out of poverty to see that life is not over and that some of the damage can be repaired. I believe that learning how to build and repair helps to shape one’s character and look at life differently. If these young people can figure out how to repair a broken furnace, HVAC system, or a home, then they can figure out how to repair their lives and end the cycle poverty. To take something that is broken, repair it, redefine it and re-purpose it, all the while increasing its value, this has to be God’s design for the people. *This story is a part of our "Life After IMPACT" Publication</image:caption>

<image:caption>Q. The Mission of IMPACT Community Action is to reduce poverty by providing hope -inspiring help and real opportunities for self-sufficiency, tell us what led you to become the next drop in the ripple effect? A. I was homeless and felt helpless in Cleveland, Ohio. I literally lived on the street with my active addiction. My face was plastered as a most wanted fugitive in Cleveland. Drug and alcohol abuse became my life and my arrest actually saved my life. If you Google my name, you will see my photos. These mug shot photos document my history with law enforcement. Q. You heard about the Re–Entry Program at IMPACT, what did you think? A. I did not know what to think. I knew I was going to trained to become a functional member of society --“whatever that is” -- and I would recapture my life. Q. What was your first impression? A. I wanted to be here so badly. I needed a family and IMPACT became my family. I sat in a room with so many people like me. We were lost and had no idea where our lives were going. Q. When did you want to change? A. I realized while in the “Mis–Socialization of Incarcerated Persons” workshop that I did not love myself. Because of this, I did not know how to love other people. It was sobering to learn that until I got it (my life) right in my heart, I would continue in the cycle of my own self abuse. Q. What does it mean to have hope? A. Hope that I can get up in the morning and look forward to another day. I can pray and not beg God to do something for me that he gave me the power to do for myself. Before the Re-Entry Program I looked in the mirror and saw a 12-time convicted felon. I did not recognize myself. But now when I look in the mirror, I see a woman that has come a long way. I accomplished something in this program that I so desperately needed. I lost my past and I found myself. I found out that what I did yesterday does not define the woman that I am today. Q. Who are you now? A. I am a woman that is determined, focused and hopeful! I have the potential to be anything that I need to be. I am a tax-paying citizen! I am a part of this great society and most importantly, I am no longer that girl in the mug shot! Q. What are you doing with your life? A. Today, I am gainfully employed! I got a job with benefits! I know this may sound silly, but when you have thought for so long that you would never do something and you finally do it, it is incredible! I passed all of my testing and received the Workforce Readiness Credential. I proved to myself that I could do it. I also can go to college. Like my instructors, I want to be one of those people who believe that people like me can make it if we receive the right guidance and are inspired by people who won’t give up on you. Q. You have experienced the Re-Entry Work Readiness Program, now what do you think? A. This is one of the best experiences that I ever had a chance to be a part of. I would recommend this program to every incarcerated person. This is a win-win program. For once in my life I got a chance to work on myself before I could better anyone else. This is a real program for real people with real needs.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Q. Where are you now? A. I am the proud owner of a 2000 Chevy Impala with 76K miles on it! I am a graduate of Columbus State Community College and I have accepted a job offer in my field making $14.00 an hour! I am coming out of my depression and putting my life back on track. I am excited about life again! Q. Where were you before? I am a single parent of four school-aged children. I was afforded the opportunity to go to school and pursue a certification as a Dental Lab Technician. My car broke down and after it was gone my life changed tremendously. Without transportation, I felt trapped, stuck and coming to a dead end. I had no mobility. My children walked with me and carried groceries home. I rode my bike back and forth from school. Occasionally people would help but I lost my freedom. Living on the excess of my educational loans meant that the bus was not an affordable or convenient option. I dropped my children out of their sports activities because I couldn’t get them back and forth. My graduation was nearing and I would need to find a job immediately or lose everything. No transportation, school, children, bills, employment, it was too much. I felt over whelmed and slipped into depression. I took the medication but what I really needed was hope and IMPACT and the Buy Car Program gave it to me. How did you hear about IMPACT? A. I got an e-mail from a friend who read an article in “The Columbus Dispatch” about the Buy Car Program. She knew how bad I was struggling and said that this was the perfect program for me. Q. What was your dream? A. My dream was to be able to obtain my certification as a Dental Lab Technician so that I would have a better employment opportunity, earn more than minimum wage and take care of my family. Q. How did IMPACT help? A. I attended a workshop for the By Car Program at IMPACT. I had never been to a Community Action Agency before. I was a little intimidated but the staff made us comfortable and welcomed us to IMPACT. As they began to explain the program they were able to simplify the process so that we could grasp what was required. I was all ready stressed out and they were calm, confident and reassuring. They took me step by step through the process. I must admit I had my doubts; but as I progressed, my confidence increased and I felt like this was really going to happen for me. Q. Can you tell us about the transition? The transition came when I put my money into the program. I saved $1,333.00 which is like a million dollars to someone like me. I sacrificed believing that if I got a car, it would change my life. Being able to contribute my own funds meant that this was not a hand out but a hand up. I helped myself in this process, I am very proud of that. When I got the keys to my car I cried … I felt restored and accomplished. Q. What was the ripple effect? A. Transportation was the greatest barrier that I had to my future. The ripple effect is that I am now gainfully employed in a job on my career path making $14.00 an hour! The next ripple is that my children will have the opportunity to learn and compete because I will be able to transport them to practice and we can function as a family for the first time in a long time. They have a mom that they can be proud of and not have to worry so much. I didn’t realize what the domino effect of being without transportation was or how it would affect me but now that I have been to IMPACT, I know about the ripple effect and my ripple is to tell every about IMPACT and how the Buy Car Program helped me. I own my own vehicle… you could never know how that feels. Now I have another chance at a better life for myself and my children, this feels great!</image:caption>

<image:title>Mr. Kenneth Wade - Mr. Kenneth Wade</image:title>
<image:caption>If my life was a movie it would be entitled, “Nothing is Impossible,” starring Kenneth David Wade. I am 62 years old and employed with the Water Sewage Treatment Plant. I make $24.50 an hour and none of this would have been possible without IMPACT’s Building Futures Program. I begin my movie with the happy ending because this is my new beginning…a beginning that started from a place of fear, doubt and insecurity. I never thought that I would recover it all, but nothing is impossible. An injury left me disabled and all of my confidence was gone. I’d worked all of my life. I started out at the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation with a State Inspectors and Heavy Machine Equipment Operators License. I’ve never been fired and whenever I left a job it was for a better job that paid more money. I transferred from Local Union #323 located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to the Local Union #423 in Columbus, Ohio, and remained employed. After the injury, the thought of living off a disability check, going back and forth to doctor’s appointments, and trying to manage my pain, scared the hell out of me. My life was completely shattered. I felt helpless and was residing in the men’s shelter at Faith on Grant, but thank God someone left a flyer for the Building Futures Construction Trades program on the bulletin board. I was in orientation seated in the midst of young men half my age and I began to doubt myself. A staff person told me that with my skills and knowledge I was more than qualified to be in that room. He looked me square in the eye and said, “If you want it, go after it. This opportunity is worth the frustration, anger and doubt, but only if you want it.” That’s when I told myself nothing is impossible. In the classroom there were no blurred lines. I felt an energy I hadn’t felt in a while, I was learning yet I struggled with the math…after all, I graduated in 1975. I’ve been out of school for43 years but nothing is impossible. I received tutoring. The synergy of the teachers and students fed my confidence and I passed the test. When Building Futures paid my re-instatement fee to the Local #423 Laborers Union, I was back to the place I thought I had lost. I said to myself, I will never lose this again. IMPACT talks about the ripple effect, well, this was mine. I graduated from the Building Futures program and received my tools. I was hired by Shook Construction and began work at the Water Treatment Plant. I started out making $24.50 an hour with the potential to make up to $29.00 an hour. Then I got a call from the Community Shelter Board, they told me that I have housing and my first two months have already been paid. I also learned that my affiliation with the union could potentially benefit my children and grand-children in their pursuit of a college education. After everything that I’ve been through, just the thought that I might be able to pass my trade onto my next generation makes me cry, unbelievable. Roll the credits! IMPACT’s Building Futures program helped me build a brighter future for myself and my family. This is my story and I am living proof that, “Nothing is Impossible.” *This story is a part of our "Life After IMPACT" Publication</image:caption>

<image:caption>Q. Where are you now? A. I am employed with Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. I make $35.00 an hour and I am part of a construction team. I am living my dream and it feels great! Q. Where were you before? I have come from a broken home, an addictive life style, and living on the streets. I dropped out of school in 9th grade. I was homeless and felt helpless and I did not believe that I had a future. Q. How did you hear about IMPACT? A. I was attempting to apply for a program and I heard a speaker talk about the S.O.S. (Support of Self-Sufficiency) program. I knew he was talking just to me. I needed a plan to get myself together. With help from my Family Development Specialist at IMPACT, I was able to create an Individual Service Plan to reduce my barriers to self-sufficiency and pursue my dreams of education, housing, life-skills and having a support system. Q. What was your dream? A. I wanted to become a heavy-equipment operator. This would require certification and educational requirements, plus I had to deal with me! Q. How did IMPACT help? A. IMPACT placed me in the Re-Entry Program. I was one of the first people to go through this new program. They helped me identify my own self-defeating behaviors and develop a positive support system. Now that I was no longer holding myself back, they supported my transition. Q. Can you tell us about the transition? I became a participant in the Support of Self–Sufficiency Program (S.O.S.) in January ’09. By July, I was accepted to the Re-Entry Program. Next I moved on to Workforce Development. I attended classes in Logan, Ohio for Phase I training for my heavy-operator’s equipment license. I was the only African- American female in my class and I scored 100% on every test that I took. IMPACT helped me recover my driver’s license after 15 years! I received my G.E.D. in August, 2010. IMPACT partnered with the Central Ohio Workforce Investment Corporation (COWIC) to help leverage dollars for me to attend Al-Win Training Inc. IMPACT also paid my union dues. After this registration I was able to become employed by the City. I was partnered with everyone who could help me become successful. Q. What happened next? A. I was able to secure a job at an apartment complex and my housing was included with my employment. I was no longer homeless. In 2011 I had a $19-an-hour job driving a fork lift and I should have been happy, but I wasn’t. My Family Development Specialist continued to help me stay focused on my dream. To me, “Support of Self–Sufficiency” means that people don’t give up on you – they empower you. It takes time and effort and help from all kinds of places to reduce your barriers. Now I live my dream every day and I will never wear anything other than my bright pink hard hat. IMPACT made me a survivor!</image:caption>

<image:title>Mr. John Jackson - Mr. John Jackson</image:title>
<image:caption>Q. Who is John Jackson? A. I am the president and founder of Top Competitions USA, which is a faith-based, traveling, competitive cheerleading and dance team company that celebrates today’s youth for their leadership and athletic ability. I’m also a full-time employee of Eddie Bauer and a sober friend of God for the rest of my life. Q. What is John Jackson’s Story? A. I came to IMPACT Community Action looking for purpose and direction. During my addiction I had purposely blown every opportunity that I’d had. Now that I was sober, I had very little hope of recapturing my dreams because I believed that I had run out of chances to own my own business. While attending classes at IMPACT, I met Sue Petersen, the Chief Financial Officer at IMPACT. I shared my dreams with her and she directed me to the Financial Services Department. Through an opportunity provided by IMPACT, in partnership with JPMorgan Chase Bank, I was able to secure an Individual Development Account (IDA) that helped me start my own business! Q. What was your turning point in your life? A. Following my completion of IMPACT’s Re-Entry Work Readiness Program and its Employment Plus Program, I landed a job and was very excited! I invested $1,000 of my own money into the IDA Program and earned $3,000 at a 3:1 match ratio towards my business! Creating my company’s webpage and having a presence on social media was just like finding your first telephone number in the phone book and realize, “I am somebody!” With these dollars I acquired marketing materials, designed my logo, acquired my business name, became licensed and purchased my vendor’s registration. Q. What does this opportunity mean to you? A. This opportunity means everything to me! I thought about my dream in the midst of my nightmare. My addiction started at an early age and cheering gave me a platform of self-expression to rid myself of anger, pain and fear. No matter what was going on in my life, in order for me to compete at a high level, I had to remain focused, maintain academics, and exercise discipline and physical strength. I was afforded the opportunity to work as an instructor for the Universal Cheerleader Association (UCA) which is the nation’s largest cheer company. I worked with the best of the best. I taught competitive cheering techniques from the junior leagues to collegiate-level competitors, and I was very successful. I travelled across the country to the best competitions in many cities nationwide. I have been in the cheering business for 30 years; but when I look back, I especially remember going to a competition and overhearing one of the Instructors ask another instructor, “what were they going to do with the ‘TD teams’?” I did not know what a “TD team” was, but everyone else did. Curious to know what it meant, I was informed that the term meant “technically difficult” and by observation it was directed towards the teams from the inner city and urban communities. I thought to myself, “they are talking about me. I came from an urban community and I was a top competitor. Why weren’t these kids considered competitors?” Then it dawned on me that the inner city and urban youth would never have the opportunity to compete in an arena where passion met precision in a uniformed manner. I created TOP Competitions USA so that youth who could not afford the expense of cheering and competition would have the opportunity to compete locally at a high quality competition. Q. How has TOP Competition USA been received? A. TOP Competition USA has been received greatly! We have competitions scheduled to take place in Columbus and Cincinnati by the end of the year and are looking forward to expansion in 2016. The Chase IDA Program dollars helped establish the foundation for TOP Competitions USA, and I set three goals for my business. The first goal was to establish a local competition. The second goal was to build on our momentum and develop events state wide. My third goal is to create national competitions. I could never have dreamt this big without IMPACT and Chase. Q. How has the Promise of Community Action served you? A. These programs changed my life! When I came into IMPACT, I was hopeless but I found hope. I thought I lost hope but it was just misplaced in my addiction. I know it may sound silly and a little cliché; but through this process I have learned to chase what matters. Top Competitions USA Cheer and Dance Competitions will promote neighborhood pride in the inner city and urban communities. We will raise the expectation and self-esteem of young competitors and will help them develop the discipline to maintain academics and to create leaders in these neighborhoods. If this company can save one child from a life of drugs, alcohol and abuse and give hope that he/she can do something with his/her life, then I have completed my assignment and this matters to me most. I will be eternally grateful for the opportunity provided by Chase Bank’s IDA Program to help me actualize my dream. IDA should stand for “Individual Dreams Achieved!”</image:caption>

<image:title>Ms. Elizabeth Buckler - Ms. Elizabeth Buckler</image:title>
<image:caption>Q. Who is Elizabeth Buckler? A. I am a 24-year-old single mother who adores her five-year old son. I know what it means to live modestly on a single income and pray for the opportunity to better one’s self. Early childhood education is my passion. I am actively pursuing financial stability and opportunities to further my career and achieve my dream of becoming a Montessori teacher. I am employed at the Columbus Montessori Education Center as a staff support person. Columbus Montessori Education Center is a private, independent school that offers authentic Montessori education to children as young as six weeks to children who are entering the sixth grade. The Montessori program nurtures the children’s individuality while meeting their emotional and intellectual needs, also. This teaching style really appeals to me. Q. How did you hear about the JPMorgan Chase IDA Program? A. When you live on a budget it is important that you find resources that save you money. After receiving free income tax preparation at IMPACT, I learned about the Chase IDA (Individual Development Account) Program. My initial thought was to use the funds to further my college education at Columbus State Community College, but the Associate Degree program offering would not help me achieve my goal to becoming a Montessori teacher. Q. What was the barrier to achieving your goal? A. My barrier was money to pay for the Montessori certification. In order to achieve my goal of becoming a Montessori teacher, I must become credentialed through the Teacher Education Program (TEP) through the American Montessori Society (AMS). The TEP is not a collegiate offering but training offered through the AMS that is accredited by the Montessori Council for Teacher Education (MACTE). I am fortunate to be employed at a school that offers this specialized training and that this training is offered at a 50% discount for employees. However, even with this great discount, pursuing this credential was a huge strain on my finances, which I could not afford. The credential costs $7,200, which may not be a lot of money to some people; but for me this cost was a huge barrier. Q. How did you plan to overcome this barrier? A. I found a program though a local agency that offered an opportunity that I’d dreamt about. It was the perfect answer that would help me achieve my educational goals without acquiring too much debt. However, when I learned that program’s criteria required applicants with educational goals to earn a degree, my heart sank. I thought “here is my dream opportunity, and I can’t obtain it.” I attended Columbus State Community College for two years and realized that this was not the best route for me. The Associate Degree program would not get me to my dream of being a teacher at Columbus Montessori Educational Center. I was so disappointed. Then I learned about the Chase IDA Program; and I decided to advocate for myself. I wrote a very compelling letter to Mr. Jarod Taylor, who is the Financial Literacy Manager at IMPACT, to explain my dilemma and the expectations of Montessori education. Even though the Chase IDA Program criteria required a degree, I believed that in this case, the credential was an equivalent and should be given the same consideration. Q. What happened next? A. Mr. Taylor understood my situation completely. I was hesitant to pursue help beyond IMPACT’s support; but Mr. Taylor encouraged me to share my story with the funders. His faith in Chase Bank was real and strong. Chase accepted my application and I was over whelmed. Q. How has the Chase IDA Program impacted your financial future? A. As an employee of Montessori education, I received a 50% discount on the $7,200 tuition, which left me with a balance of $3,600. The Chase IDA applied $3,250 towards my education and I am making affordable payments on the remaining balance of $350. Once I become a credentialed Montessori teacher, I will receive a pay increase. I will also receive a $5,000 bonus annually for as long as I teach in the Montessori School system. I can use of portion of these dollars to invest in another credential through the TEP, which would provide an additional $5,000 annual bonus for maintaining another credential, too. None of this would have been possible without this opportunity through IMPACT and JPMorgan Chase! I am so thankful. Receiving this gift has rejuvenated my spirit and allowed me to see a different future for my son and me. Q. What else would you like us to know? When I had my son five years ago, I was making $10 an hour. I was receiving Title XX Child Care benefits which enabled me to pay a small affordable fee towards childcare. I earned a pay increase to $11 an hour, which excited me until I learned that I would no longer qualify for the child care subsidy and that the daycare expense would jump from $10 a week to nearly $400 a month. I had to decline the pay increase so I could afford daycare for my son. Ironically, the pay increase would have created a financial hardship. The gap between assistance and affordability is huge. You simply can’t tell people that they need to get a job anymore because there is not enough equity in earnings. I work and I’ve struggled to pay bills and keep up with what is needed. I believe that financial freedom begins with education and with opportunities like the one I’ve had with IMPACT and Chase Bank. They are directly responsible for making my dreams come true and can expect a return on their investment in me. If you are reading this story and have been doubtful about your future, call IMPACT. Community Action is here to help you and with partners like Chase Bank, the opportunities are real and life changing.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“I can’t believe this is my life after IMPACT!” --Marvetta Froe-Shelton, Re-entry & Employment Plus program. When the Dean of Public Administration at Franklin University called my name to receive my Master’s Degree, time stood still. Like a movie, my mind flashed back through a Rolodex of images that chronicled the timeline of my life. I saw a single, divorced mother whose alcohol and drug abuse led to incarceration. I saw myself looking for hope. I saw myself enrolled in IMPACT’s Re-Entry Work Readiness and Employment Plus programs. I saw myself leaping out of my Johari window, speaking my truth, and conquering the fears that held me in suspended animation. I saw myself in a cap and gown graduating from IMPACT’s Employment Plus program. Fast forward and then I was back at Franklin University. I was once again in a cap and gown and the deja vu was real. I realized that I was in a different place but having the same experience, accomplishing another one of my dreams. I really can’t believe this is my life. I pinch myself sometimes and say, “Marvetta Froe-Shelton, this is your life.” I am a mother who fought for custody of my daughter and won. I am an Adjunct Instructor for Ashland University and teach at Chillicothe, Circleville, and Ohio Reformatory for Women. I am the Operations Manager for Nothing into Something Real Estate (Jessie’s World). Jessie’s World is a temporary housing facility for women who have experienced incarceration or some type of trauma that has led to behavioral disorders. Breaking Barriers is the name of my new business. I provide life skills development through coaching, resiliency training, leadership, and personal development and none of this would be possible if I had not been given hope. If you can imagine being encapsulated in dynamism, that purges the innermost feelings of guilt and shame. I was engaged in a program that confronts the poverty of the human spirit and develops the skills that make one competent and competitive. I was supported by a staff that would not allow me to tap out on life but challenged me to tap into my true potential. This was my experience with Empowerment Services at IMPACT Community Action. I felt empowered and was inspired to empower others. This is what I am doing with my life after IMPACT. I don’t feel like I’m working. I feel like I am serving in my passion and walking in my purpose. To be able to live the life that God intended is the greatest thing I have been given through IMPACT. The tipple effect is real and as I share my testimony with the many incarcerated women that I speak with, I share that hope starts at IMPACT. *This story is a part of our "Life After IMPACT" Publication</image:caption>

<image:caption>Q. When is your Class Anniversary? A. April 1, 2014! That is an anniversary that I will never forget. Employment Plus Program Class #51. Q. How are you? A. I am just about a year older, a year wiser and a year better! Q. Are you still employed? A. Yes, I am a Theft Prevention Officer for Global Recycling. I am a full-time employee at $10.00 an hour. Q. Can you describe your transition since graduation? A. It’s hard to explain. The day after graduation is like the day after tomorrow. That day is the first day of the rest of your life and the desire to succeed becomes your next motivation. You want to stay at IMPACT but they push you out the door with a life line. Through ongoing case management, I have met with my Family Development Specialist and remained focused on my long term goals. Q. What are your long term goals? A. My goal is home ownership. I am currently actively participating in a savings program that will help me decrease my contribution to the down payment on a new home. Homeownership classes are coming along with a strategy to build my credit rating and clean up some things. In order to know that I have truly moved forward, I must own something and purchasing a home is an investment into my future and the future of my family. Q. How do you feel? A. My self esteem is at an all time high! I feel better and my health has improved. I am still a big guy but I’ve lost weight and lowered my blood pressure. My transformation is ongoing as I keep challenging myself to be the best person I can be. Q. What is your biggest fear? A. The uncertainty of the job market is constant motivation to stay sharp. I would hate to lose my job but that wouldn’t be the worst thing that could happen. The worst thing would be to resort back to the defenseless, helpless person that I was a year ago. I am applying everything that I learned in Employment Plus today, for tomorrow. Now I am confident that I have the skills to remain attractive in the job market and can apply myself based on the employers needs not just my need to get a job . Q. Has your community changed in the last year? A. Weinland Park is better because I’m better. I am a part of the recovery of this community and it will get better as more people embrace change. Experiencing poverty makes you feel like you are under attack and trying to regain balance becomes a juggling act. My distorted view of my community was because of my disposition. I am responsible for any outcome where I can make a difference so today I see my community differently and embrace all of the support being poured into Weinland Park to make it a better place. Q. Would you recommend The Employment Plus Program? A. I’ve recommended this program to my friends and anyone that I’ve met who needs a second chance at doing things the right way. My enthusiasm for this program gets me looked at a little crazy. I mean I am velvet voiced, six foot, two inch, 295 pounds of muscle man, whose pitch rises to that of a high school cheer leader when speaking about this program. It’s not a hard sell especially when people can see your transformation. Q. What would you like to tell CHASE Bank? A. Your investment into my future is money well spent! I could never thank you enough for supporting IMPACT and what they do. What I gained from this program is priceless and the return on your investment means that somebody like me will achieve his dream and share it with others. My family thanks you. Because of IMPACT and the staff and resources that they used to help me, I am a better person, a better man and a better friend. I would ask that you continue to support Employment Plus. To know that CHASE is more than a bank/financial institute, but a bank that cares about the community, all of it, from the wealthiest to the poorest means a lot. I believe your slogan is “chase what matters”. I am glad that you did. By looking into Weinland Park when all seemed lost, and finding me, it has truly changed my life.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“If I can help somebody, then my living is not in vain. That is how I feel every day when I wake up to what God has blessed me with and the opportunities that I have to help others.” --Jeffrey Samich, SOS program. Support of Self- Sufficiency (S.O.S.) is what IMPACT named the newly piloted program back in 2010. Most people know that SOS is an acronym for a distress call to “save our ship.” The distress call is made after it has been determined that there is no hope of recovery unless assisted. I was drowning in potential and living with the word “if,” every day. My daily contemplations were if I could save enough money, if I could get my license restored, if I could purchase a vehicle then I could start my small business. If only someone would give me a little help I could make it to the future I had always envisioned. IMPACT was there for me. Through comprehensive case management, financial coaching and my individual needs assessment, it was determined that I had the potential to start my small business and get back on my feet. IMPACT believed in me and supported my vision to become an entrepreneur. This was my real opportunity for self-sufficiency. I was able to contribute my dollars along with IMPACT’s investment to regain my license and purchase my first vehicle for the business and now the rest is history. Today, I am the CEO of Logistic Resources Inc. I operate a small professional staffing agency that specializes in placing skilled trades personnel, material handlers and conveyor installers. I also train and hire individuals for temporary assignments. These temp jobs are opportunities to provide second chance employment to the disadvantaged through home remodeling, housekeeping and commercial cleaning. As an employer, I’ve come back to IMPACT to offer seasonal employment to program participants. Not only am I self-sufficient but my calling in life is to help the disenfranchised, the forgotten and the lost, find their way back to self-sufficiency. I am giving these people the same thing that IMPACT Community Action gave to me which is hope. The hope that, if provided the right opportunity at the right time, it can change your entire life, I believe this. *This story is a part of our "Life After IMPACT" Publication</image:caption>

<image:title>Mr. William Graves - Mr. William Graves</image:title>
<image:caption>Where does the William Graves Story begin? My story begins in Columbus, Ohio, where I was born and raised. I lost both of my parents when I was 5; and for the next 12 formative years, I lived with two (maternal) aunts, who raised me as their own child. Considering my circumstances, my life was somewhat good. We moved around a lot, so I wound up attending four different high schools (South, Marion Franklin, Hamilton Township and Independence), and ultimately obtained a G.E.D. Shortly after high school however, my life seemed to have taken a change for the worse. By hanging around with the wrong crowd, picking up bad habits and trying to fight off the demons, my life quickly went out of control and sent me on a downward spiraling path. How did you address your life’s downward spiral? I knew I had to stop, step back and make some changes. By the power of God, I was able to reach deep down inside of myself and pull myself together; and I decided to join the Navy. I passed all of the necessary tests, but something wasn’t right. I talked with some friends from my church and I was encouraged to continue my education. I enrolled in Columbus State Community College and decided to pursue a degree in business. I made the Dean’s List and was an Honor Roll student. Inspired by my friends and mentors from church, I transferred to Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia and earned a B.A. in Financial Management. After graduation, I landed a job with Naval Sea Systems Command in Arlington, Virginia and was in pursuit of a successful career. Employed and pursuing a Master’s degree part time, I had a promising career and was on track to achieving my goals. You achieved success and had a promising future. What happened next? Over the years, I became seriously depressed and the demons returned. Once again, my life spiraled downward and out of control but it was much faster and fiercer than the first time. After a series of bad decisions, losing my job, exhausting my finances and burning all of my bridges, I caught a case that landed me in the Arizona Department of Corrections for 11 years. Despite the chaos, the setbacks and the mayhem, prison did not break me. Instead, I found peace and purpose. I was able to break free from the depression, conquer the demons and to clear my head. God kept me motivated to reclaim my pursuit of a successful career and a successful life. I was paroled on Valentine’s Day in 2014. All I had were the clothes on my back and just over $1,200 I earned from the jobs I had in prison. I was committed to make the most of any opportunity that came my way; but no one would give me that opportunity. So I turned to Craig’s List to advertise my services as a general laborer (yard work, moving jobs, odd jobs, etc.). I did this for roughly four months before deciding to move back to Columbus. What led you to IMPACT Community Action? When I moved back to Columbus, a friend told me about IMPACT’s Re-Entry Program and I decided to give it a try. I was enrolled in Re-Entry Class #39 and it was one of the best decisions I’ve made. The program instructors were very knowledgeable and passionate about their work. I was in a class with others, who, like me, were looking to make the most of a second chance opportunity. Through this program we learned to draw from our individual life experiences to help us embrace our potential, reconnect with our families and friends, and to prepare for a successful future. After the Re-Entry Program, I was enrolled in IMPACT’s Employment Plus Class #71. This program taught me job skills and interviewing techniques, instilled a new level of confidence within me, inspired and motivated me, and pushed me to expand and grow. While in the Employment Plus Program I applied to Restoration Academy, a program started by then-Mayor Michael B. Coleman to assist restored citizens with job training and internships. Little did I know that two of the instructors from IMPACT had already recommended me for this program. Restoration Academy was such a great learning experience and such a great opportunity, which led me back to IMPACT as an intern in its Human Resources Department. I wanted to make the most of this six-month internship with IMPACT. I wanted to build my skills, prove myself and eventually find permanent work. HR is fast-paced, challenging and interesting. Committed and focused, I pursued a Certification in Human Resources, which I earned from the Business Training Institute in August 2015. But God wasn’t through with me yet. Later that year, IMPACT hired me full time as a Human Resources Assistant. What’s next for William Graves? I am so grateful to God for covering me during my 11 years of incarceration and for directing my friend to tell me about IMPACT and its Re-Entry Program, which started me down this new path. I am still expanding and pushing forward, still setting goals and dreaming; and I am committed to making it all a reality. Along the way, I like to share my story and gratitude with the hopes of motivating and helping as many people as possible. I have spoken to graduates of IMPACT’s Re-Entry and Employment Plus classes. I encourage them to not let their past or anyone prevent them from setting goals and having dreams (big dreams) and making them a reality. I believe in hard work and the benefits of hard work. I remind them that there will be obstacles and times of doubt; but to push through and overcome. I remind them “but with God, all things are possible …”</image:caption>

<image:caption>“To see the smile on my granddaughter’s face warms my heart. Nyla Marie Carter is the sunshine of our lives.” --Sandra Carter, HWAP program. I am so proud of my granddaughter Nyla. She is an honor roll student at Berwyn East Academy. She is healthy and thriving. We live in a small ranch style home on a corner lot in a good neighborhood and our home is energy efficient. It is brightly lit, but more importantly we have a “roof” over our heads and I mean that literally. I can laugh about it now but when I think about how IMPACT helped us through its Home Weatherization Assistance (HWAP) and AEP program, the tears form quickly in my eyes because I have to admit, I had just about given up. I remember Nyla saying, “Granny I can hear the squirrels running around in the attic from my bedroom.” My husband and I spent all of our life savings to have the roof fixed but we fell victim to a scam. Five thousand dollars might as well be five million when you are on Social Security. Our life savings was gone, the roof was exposed, my husband’s health was in decline and no one could assist us because roof repair is the home owner’s responsibility and well beyond minor repair. I was facing a terrible decision. Would I have to give up my grand baby so that she could have a safe place to live? My faith was shaken and I just didn’t believe in people anymore. IMPACT’s HWAP staff advocated for me with their program partner American Electric Power and AEP provided $6,645 to repair my roof. Afterwards, HWAP weatherized my home and provided energy efficient appliances and lighting. IMPACT also provided some other services during the holiday season. I was grateful and I participated but a small part of me was still in disbelief. After all that I had been through, I felt like no one cared about us, but somehow God uses something or someone to test your faith and this was it for me. AEP’s generosity and the compassion shown towards my family through IMPACT Community Action, restored my faith in people, in programs and in prayer. I smile because our little Nyla is safe and can comfortably sleep in her own room. *This story is a part of our "Life After IMPACT" Publication Don’t worry about sounding professional. <image:title>Mr. Daunte M - Mr. Daunte M</image:title>
<image:caption>Q. Where are you now? A. I am a 40-year old, single and gainfully-employed African American man; I have been reunited with my family and I am chasing my dream, while living life to the fullest every day. Q. Where were you before? A. At the age of 21, I was a young man with dreams, hopes and potential; but I was also immature, irresponsible, impressionable and reckless. I made a mistake that cost me 18 years of my life. I went to jail in June, 1994 and was released on May 23, 2012. Q. What happened? A. While incarcerated I fully adapted to my environment. My trust level was at zero and I lived in a world by myself. When they shut that door and I realized that I was not getting out, I had to disconnect myself emotionally. I shut down my feelings for 23 hours a day. I became detached and my heart was like stone. Anger and violence were the tools I used so I wouldn’t become a victim while serving my time; but those are the most primitive emotions and they change you. I always felt like I deserved every day of those 18 years, and I was truly remorseful. However, the reality was that the behavior I had adopted would keep me in prison; but that wasn’t my biggest fear. I came into the realization that upon my release, my biggest fear was that I would not be accepted or fit into society and that I would fail and return to prison – perhaps this time for life. Q. How did you hear about IMPACT? A. My Corrections Sergeant told me about IMPACT. He said “son this is a good program, you need to set yourself up for success and not failure.” He also told me that I had potential but I needed training and if I didn’t get some, I would end up back in prison. He told that I needed to get as much help while still in prison and then when I got out of prison, I should take advantage of every program and service that I could find. Q. How did IMPACT help you? A. IMPACT placed me in its Re-Entry Program in June. When I began the classes I had very little, if any social skills. Although I was no longer behind bars, I was still imprisoned within myself. The Re-Entry Work Readiness Program was way more than what I thought it would be. I became proactive in education and resources while I was in prison; but after 18 years of holding on to old ways of thinking, this program helped me to let go of my past and get back in touch with my emotions and understand others. We did an exercise called the “Johari Window” and it took me two hours to clear my heart and my head and make up my mind that I was done with the past and was moving forward. We progressed daily to understanding our present value to society and how we still had time to make a difference. The Family Development Specialists will not let you give up. From the moment that I stepped in the door I felt encouraged and that they genuinely cared about my future. Q. What can you tell us about your transition? A. My mother always supported me. I know that she loves me but she deserved to have the opportunity to be proud of her son and I was determined to be successful after re-entry. Can I tell you that the Employment Plus Program is the truth?! I was challenged everyday in some way, shape, form or fashion. Between Computer Literacy, resume writing, classroom scenarios, team building and redefining myself, there was never time for me to doubt myself. Now that I had become employable, I needed a job to validate my transformation. I was given the opportunity to apply for a job while still attending the class and I got the job. By August I had a job at White Glove Cleaning of Ohio, a reputable commercial cleaning company. My new employer stated that I was professional and represented myself well. I actually became gainfully employed before the program ended, but I felt like I owed it to my classmates to continue to press on with them until they graduated and got jobs. I worked the night shift and I didn’t get off until 3:00 a.m. or sometimes 4:00 a.m., but I was determined to finish what I started. So I would get off work, get two hours of sleep and then go to class at IMPACT. When I graduated, in cap and gown, with a job and a new family, I was finally able to give my mother a moment where she could be proud of me. My kids and my family are my life and now they have their father and a son who they can trust and say that he overcame his obstacles and got on the right track. Q. What is your dream? A. My dream is to own a cleaning company. I want to grow my company into an opportunity for not only financial freedom but wealth where I can employ others who need a second chance. I talk about IMPACT all the time and I want to do for others the same things that were done for me. My business will make an everlasting impression and change someone’s life.</image:caption>

<image:title>Ms. Carmella Phillips - Ms. Carmella Phillips</image:title>
<image:caption>Q. Who is Carmella Phillips? A. I provide case management support for the Empowerment Services Department at the agency that changed my life, IMPACT Community Action. I am a full-time employee with benefits; and I earn a livable wage. I am very grateful to have this opportunity to pay it forward at this time in my life. Q. What is Carmella Philips’ Story? A. I almost don’t know where to start. Twenty-five years of experience in the administrative field, a disabled child, a lifestyle that I had grown accustomed to, addiction and a bitter divorce collided and sent me sliding off the cliff. In facing some things, I realized that I had lost my self-confidence and the will to determine how I would live my life. I’d misplaced my dreams; but somehow I believed that these situations were designed for me to face life with a deeper sense of purpose and to figure out how to spend the rest of my life’s currency. Before IMPACT entered my life, there was Amethyst. Amethyst is a community of recovery that offers a long-term residential treatment program for alcoholics. I completed the Amethyst program successfully; but I had become impoverished. I didn’t know how to obtain resources or assistance; but sobriety awakens a clear channel in one’s soul. Armed with clearly identified goals and a map of the social service world before me, I decided to move forward and to recapture my life. Q. What happened next? A. With so much riding on my ability to re- enter the workforce and regain independent living; I came to IMPACT just hoping to get a job through its Employment Plus Program; but I got empowered instead. Empowerment strengthens your internal and external mechanism. It’s kind of hard to explain so I’ll say it like this, while the Employment Plus class was developing me from the outside, the inside of me was growing stronger every day, too. Although I had an administrative background, I purposely became a sponge and absorbed as much as I could. Between the workforce development training, financial coaching, computer literacy, strategic job-searching techniques and the business clothing support (from Dress for Success), I felt inspired, uplifted and encouraged; and I believed that I could accomplish anything. Q. What was the turning point? A. The Employment Plus program instructors were excellent and they challenged our class to face our fears and to believe that we could conquer all. Class 55 graduated and I was ready for the world! I learned from “The Art of War,” a book we read in class, to choose your battles, plan your attack and apply the techniques to overcome your enemy to be successful; or in this case, to get my life back. I had a test and now I have a testimony; but somehow, I had to prove to myself and to others that I could be productive. I was searching for employment and learned that IMPACT was hiring. I applied for a job at IMPACT five times! I wanted to work for IMPACT so badly. I imagined how wonderful it would be if I could help others at the same place that helped me! In March 2014, I was hired part-time at IMPACT as an Emergency Assistance Representative. I was so happy to have this opportunity and I worked this job as if it was my last, and I rebranded myself to accommodate my new role. I applied every technique that I learned in class. Ten months later, I was offered a full-time status in my current position! I was very grateful. I had a few more barriers to my self-sufficiency; but I was determined to find a way out of poverty. Q. What happened next? A. I took advantage of training opportunities IMPACT offers its staff (webinars, workshops, seminars, etc.) and set out to be the best employee that I could be. A short while later, our department experienced reorganization and I learned my current position was being dissolved. I was confident but not completely comfortable that I would remain employed. However, I was sure that I had touched lives and made a difference in the lives of others. I was offered the full-time position of case management support, and I just cried. Q. What did this mean to you? A. It meant that I could reduce my transportation barrier. Throughout my employment, I was either on the bus or paying the repairman for the two “hoopties” that I owned. With this new position, I was able to buy myself a “sweet ride,” which means reliable, affordable transportation that is a reflection of me. Q. what would you like others to know? A. IMPACT gives second chances. I’ve seen it and I am a part of it. I pray for this organization. IMPACT believes in its results so much that it will hire people from their programs and help them to make a difference. I am a living advertisement for Empowerment Services. I tell the future Employment Plus class members that Employment Plus is an opportunity to recapture their lives and to fulfill their dreams. When people come through our doors, we don’t see problems, we see potential; and I am so glad that IMPACT saw potential in me!</image:caption>

<image:title>Percentage of Income Payment Plan (PIPP) - Percentage of Income Payment Plan (PIPP)</image:title>
<image:caption>The Percentage of Income Payment Plan (PIPP) helps Franklin County residents manage their energy bills year- round. Payments are based on a percentage of household income and are consistent year-round. If your home is heated with gas, you will have a monthly payment of 5% of your household income for your natural gas bill, and 5% of your household income for your electric bill. If you heat with electric, your monthly payment is 10% of your household income. The balance of your utility bill is subsidized by the state of Ohio. There is a minimum monthly payment of $10.00. Paying on-time and in-full each month reduces your outstanding balance. If you make 24 on-time and in-full payments, your outstanding balance with your utility company will be eliminated. Once you are enrolled in the PIPP program, you are required to re-verify your income each year. You must also be caught up on all your PIPP payments by your Anniversary Date, which is the date you signed up for PIPP. Failure to report changes in the household income or household members, missing a payment, or not re-verifying your income can result in being dropped from the program. Who is eligible for PIPP? If your household income is at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty guidelines and have utility service from an electric or natural gas company regulated by the Public Utility Commission of Ohio are eligible for the program. Homeowners and renters are eligible for assistance.
